Please join us at the Loft at The Davenport Theatre (354 W 45th St, New York, NY 10036) on May 31st and June 7 at 7:30 PM to see LADY PARTS, a cabaret full of female empowerment and firece belts!
SUMMARY OF THE SHOW!
LADY PARTS follows a group of women’s journey from ignorance and complacency to freedom and empowerment. The show begins with the introduction of archetypes that women are commonly restricted to in life as well as in entertainment. Through a “Bachelor” style competition, all of the women begin vying for the attention of our favorite romantic lead, a mediocre, white, straight man, aptly named, Chad. With the help of song and quick witted, farcical dialogue (by McKenna Batterson), we discover that women are much more interesting than the archetypes society restricts them to. The women will discover, or rather uncover their worth and individualities, in a brief 75 minute show!
HOW WE CAME TO BE!
An opportunity presented itself for a group of senior women, in the musical theatre dept. at Syracuse University, to team up and make a piece theatre that mattered to them. Naturally, we decided to tackle the misunderstandings of being a woman in today’s world. McKenna Batterson, with the assistance of Kaitlin Leddy, created the premise and book for our story. Soon the cast was working with witty words and poignantly picked songs to encapsulate and poke fun at the “female experience”. Under the direction and musical direction of Andrea Leigh Smith and Rebecca Karpoff, the cast worked tirelessly to build their characters from the ground up. There is something so special about working with a predominately female cast and crew! We were encouraged to explore and reflect on our experiences as women in a modern world. In fact, many of these conversations led to a deeper connection to the material, and in turn a more effective performance. After, the closing of LADY PARTS, it was clear that this project had not surpassed it’s ability to affect audiences. Due to a stunning amount of requests from audience members we felt it incumbent upon us to share our story with a wider audience. As Syracuse University students, we are presented with the opportunity to study our last semester in New York City at the Tepper Semester. After talking with many industry professionals we were further encouraged to produce our own work, and voilà! HERE WE ARE!
